ઘણાં બધાંને હજુ યાદ હશે વાદી, મદારી, નટ, બજાણિયા, સરાણિયા, વણઝારા, કાંગસિયા, ગાડલિયા, ડફેર આદિ અનેક પ્રકારના વ્યાવસાયિકો જે પોતાના હુન્નર સાથે ગામેગામ ફરતા અને સમાજને ઉપયોગી વસ્તુઓ બનાવી આપતા, મનોરંજન કરાવતા — એમ અનેક રીતે સહાયભૂત થતા... આપણા સમાજમાં, આપણી આસપાસ, આપણી નજર સામે જીવન માટે ઝૂરતા–ઝઝૂમતા એવા આ વિચરતા—વિમુક્ત સમુદાયનો મિત્તલ અહીં પરિચય કરાવે છે, સ્વજનોનો પરિચય કરાવતી હોય એ રીતે. આમ પણ આ આપણાં સ્વજનો જ છે, વગડે રઝળતાં સરનામાં વિનાનાં આ સમુદાયોને—સ્વજનોને આપણે આવકારવાનાં છે...
અહીં મિત્તલ પોતે જ પોતાની આ યાત્રાનો આંસુમાં ઝબોળેલી કલમથી અણસાર આપે છે. વેદનાની અનુભૂતિના હસ્તાક્ષર જેવા એના આ લખાણને વાંચતાં વાંચતાં જ્યારે ‘વાહ—’ બોલી ઊઠવાનું મન થાય છે ત્યારે હકીકતમાં તો એ વેદનાની પરાકાષ્ઠાના પ્રસંગનું વર્ણન હોય છે. એના આલેખનને વખાણીએ છીએ ત્યારે ત્યારે ઘડીભર ‘વાહ’ તો બોલાઈ જાય છે, પણ પછી તરત એ વેદના આંખો ભીંજવી દે છે.
