The first edition of this book was published in 1929 in Gujarati. About four lac copies of the same have been sold till now. The English version of this book is a special edition published by Navajivan Trust and Bombay Sarvoday Mandal, Mumbai at a subsidize price.
Five poems, expressing the life and work of Gandhiji are given at the end of this book with the thought that it may be useful to create better understanding of Gandhiji's personality. The students attending the exam could memorise them by heart.

१९२९ में गुजराती मेँ सर्वप्रथम प्रकाशित यह पुस्तक गुजराती बालकों ने खूब पढ़ा। इसी कारण नवजीवन ट्रस्ट ने १९४१ में इसका हिन्दी संस्करण प्रकाशित किया जो की काशीनाथ त्रिवेदी ने अनुवादित किया था। तब से लेके आज तक इस पुस्तक की लाखों नकलें बिक चूकी हैं। आशा है भारत का बालगण इसे उतने ही उत्साह और उमंग के साथ पढ़ेगा जैसा वह उन दीनों पढ़ता था। गांधीजी की सरल जीवनी होने के कारण इसे कई परीक्षाओं के अभ्यासक्रम में समाविष्ट किया गया है। इस वजह से यह पुस्तक नवजीवन ट्रस्ट की ओरसे रियायत दर से प्राप्य है।
